What is OIST Research Funded Internship Program?

OIST (Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology) is an international research center that focuses on advancing science and technology. Through its Research Intern program, talented students and recent graduates can work in a lab or master specific techniques under the mentorship of highly respected OIST professors, giving them valuable hands-on experience.

Program Duration and Support

The internship duration typically ranges from 2 to 6 months, giving you ample time to delve into your research project. OIST offers comprehensive support to successful applicants, including:

  • Internship Allowance: Receive a non-taxable allowance of JPY 2,400 per working day (excluding weekends).
  • Commuting Allowance: Enjoy free transportation with an OIST shuttle bus pass.
  • Travel Expenses: One round-trip air ticket will be provided (travel dates closest to the internship term).
  • Accommodation: Furnished on-campus or off-campus apartments will be arranged for you.
  • Additional Support: OIST will assist with visa acquisition, insurance procedures, and local registration for the duration of your internship.

Eligibility and Application Process

The OIST Research Internship Program welcomes outstanding students in their final undergraduate or master’s years and recent graduates from institutions in Japan and abroad. Ensure that your academic background matches the interests of potential OIST host research units.

To apply, follow these steps:

  1. Open an account: Create an account on the OIST application platform and remember your login credentials.
  2. Submit the required materials:
    • Statement of Purpose (400 words) explaining your fit with OIST, research goals, and career aspirations.
    • Academic transcripts and diplomas (if applicable).
    • At least one (maximum of three) recommendation letter(s) from an academic or research professional.
    • A recent passport-style photo.
  3. Application Periods: The selection committee reviews applications twice a year, and the process is highly competitive.
  4. Result Announcement: Results will be posted on your application platform approximately 3 months after the application deadline, and you will receive a notification.
